Is CBD Oil Safe for Dogs?

The benefits of cannabidiol (CBD) for dogs have been the subject of recent scrutiny. Some dog owners claims that CBD helps their dogs with a host of conditions. When other pet owners hear that CBD comes from marijuana plants, they immediately become wary of these products. Let’s look at the facts.

What is CBD Oil?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a popular natural remedy used for many common ailments. CBD is one of over 100 chemical compounds, known as cannabinoids, found in the hemp plant. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the main psychoactive cannabinoid found in cannabis, and causes the feeling of getting “high” that’s often associated with marijuana. However, unlike THC, CBD is not psychoactive.

This quality makes CBD an appealing option for those who are looking for relief from pain and other symptoms in a 100% natural way. CBD oil is made by extracting CBD from the hemp plant, then diluting it with a carrier oil like coconut or hemp seed oil.

It’s gaining momentum in the health and wellness world, with some scientific studies confirming it may ease symptoms of ailments like chronic pain and anxiety.

Can I use CBD oil safely for my dog?

Currently, there has been no formal study on how CBD affects our furry friends. What scientists do know, is that cannabinoids interact with the endocannabinoid receptors located in the central and peripheral nervous systems, which help maintain balance in the body and keep it in a normal healthy state.

While there’s no definitive scientific data on using CBD to treat dogs, there’s anecdotal evidence from dog owners suggesting it can treat pain, especially neuropathic pain, as well as helping to control seizures.

CBD is also used because of its anti-inflammatory properties, cardiac benefits, anti-nausea effects, appetite stimulation, anti-anxiety impact, and for possible anti-cancer benefits, although there’s no conclusive data on this use.

How can I use human CBD oil for my dog?

Yes, it’s possible to give your dog human CBD oil.

Here is why:

Your dog (along with most other mammals) actually has the same system to process cannabinoids that you have.

This system is known as the Endocannabinoid System and it helps moderate a whole variety of bodily processes using endocannabinoids.

The CBD and other compounds found in CBD supplements stimulate this system by either activating or blocking the group of receptors it contains. And that’s the same for humans, dogs, cats, horses, and most other mammals.

Many pet owners have used human CBD oil with their pets, especially when they first start experimenting with the supplement and want to gauge its effects.

However, most pet owners quickly move on to proper pet supplements.

How do I dose CBD oil for my Dog?

CBD is a non-toxic compound, meaning it won’t produce any serious side effects should you give your dog too much of it. However, CBD is known to have sedative-like effects in high doses, which can leave your dog feeling sleepy or lethargic.

In rare cases, too much CBD can also cause diarrhea, but that’s not very common. You also have to keep in mind that these effects are temporary and won’t cause your dog any lasting problems, but they’ll still cause some discomfort and should be avoided.

Ideally, you’ll want to start  your pet off on a small dose of CBD.

What dosage CBD Oil should I give my dog?

For best results, give your dog 2 doses per day, ideally in the morning and night.

General recommendations are 1mg – 5 mg CBD / 5 kg body weight

Start with a dose on the low end of the range. Changes can occur within 30 min. If there is no change after a day, increase the dosage. Occasionally improvements will take more than one treatment. To control pain, give approximately every 8 hours and for other uses, or to break unwanted behavior patterns, give once or twice a day.

Remember that you cannot overdose and there is no toxicity associated with CBD.
