The Real CBD - Drugtest blog

CBD oil and Drug tests?! Does that go together? If you are considering taking CBD oil on a daily basis for your long-term health, then you might be wondering if you could pass on a drug test?  As CBD oil is made from the cannabis plant, many people question if it would show up positive on a drug test?? Either by traffic control, on a workplace or in the sports club.

CBD oil and Drug Tests

A drug test is a technical analysis of a biological specimen, for example: urine, hair, blood, breath, sweat or oral fluid/saliva. This is to determine the presence or absence of specified drugs or their metabolites.

Breathalyzer in Traffic Controlstraffic control

Police officers testing for the presence and concentration of alcohol (ethanol) in the blood referred to as BAC (blood alcohol content). BAC tests are typically administered via a breathalyzer. A breathalyzer test only test for alcohol. If the police officer suspects the driver of having used other drugs, he can either ask for a saliva swab test or a blood test.

Mouth swabSaliva Testing

The police can test for recent drug use by using a saliver swab test. In one study, saliva testing was only able to detect the  cannabinoid (THC), 4-6 hours after the subjects had been smoking marijuana.

Blood Testingblood test

Although expensive and intrusive, blood testing is the most accurate confirmation of drug use. Blood testing accurately detects the presence of the drug or its metabolites. The results from this type of test are the best indication of current intoxication. The Cannabinoids (CBD & THC) can be detected up to six hours after consumption by testing blood. THC however can build up in the body’s fat tissue if frequent usage is the case. Your bloodtest can therefore be positive.

Urine Testing

Urine drug testing (UDT) is widely used for testing for opioids and illicit drugs. There are two types of UDT: a screening test and a confirmatory test. The screening test uses an immunoassay to look for the parent drug and/or metabolite. Most UDTs screen for marijuana, cocaine, opiates, PCP and amphetamines. Some also test for benzodiazepines and methadone. The confirmatory urine drug test is done by gas Chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) or high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). This test is highly specific and is typically used when testing for the presence of a specific drug is needed.

Drug testing for Cannabis (Marijuana)

Most drug testing is mainly looking for the psychoactive compound THC. Taking CBD oil even with traces of THC could show positive on a drug test. However large doses of THC (15% or more) does stay in your system for a while – see here how long!

Cannabinoids (THC, Marijuana) Approximate* Detection Time:

Use                                                                                     Detection time

1 time only 5-8 days
2-4x per month 11-18 days
2-4x per week 23-35 days
5-6x per week 33-48 days
Daily 49-100 days

Blood test: 2 to 3 days in blood, up to 2 weeks in blood of heavy users.  However, it depends on whether actual THC or THC metabolites are being tested for.

Saliva test: THC may only be detectable in saliva/oral fluid for 2 to 24 hours in most cases.

CBD oil Drug Tests: Simply put!

drug test passes

To simplify, if you’re only using CBD oil, you probably won’t test positive for anything depending on the method of testing. Keep in mind that positives do happen occasionally. However that has nothing to do with the presence of cannabinoids. Ultimately you need to be up to date on your employer’s specific regulations regarding drug testing. You should only buy CBD products from reputable sources.
