Guidelines for dosing CBD

What you will find on the internet, you can only use as a guideline or a starting point of reference. The fact remains that everyone is in a different place and will react differently to their CBD product. Hence, it is a subjective matter of how you treat the information you read. We have gathered examples of what people say worked for them. The Real CBD does not claim to diagnose anyone or treat illnesses and/or heal diseases. See our disclaimer.

The serving size or dosage of CBD differs for each person, it is best to start small and gradually increase until you experience the desired result.

The following is just general information obtained online from individual experiences, for you to use as a guideline.

Important Considerations for Dosing CBD

Finding an effective CBD dosage may depend on the following factors:

  • The potency of the product
  • The bioavailability of the chosen product
  • Your unique biochemistry
  • Prior experience with CBD
  • Your weight
  • Your metabolism
  • The severity of your condition
  • Other medications you’re currently taking

The following is just general information obtained online from individual experiences, for you to use as a guideline.

The Real CBD Dosage explanation CBD Oil
  • General health:  Standard serving is 25mg of CBD taken twice a day. It can be recommended that you try increasing the dosage every 2-3 days until symptom relief. And to decrease the amount of CBD with any worsening of symptoms. MORE is NOT necessarily BETTER!
  • Better quality sleep: 6-10mg CBD 1 hour before bedtime. Please also check The Real CBD Sleep Solution. However, some people feel energized by CBD and can not take it before bedtime. In this case take your CBD oil morning, midday, and the last dose 4 hours before bed.
  • High blood pressure: Starting dosage of 10mg CBD twice a day. Keep an eye on your blood pressure to make sure it doesn’t drop too low. It is very individual how CBD affects your blood pressure, so it is very important to start low and slowly increase the dosage. Easiest to start with a 5% Pure CBD Oil
  • Chronic pain and inflammation: 2.5-150 mg/day CBD for an average of 15 days. Most of our clients have had the most success in managing pain with our 15% CBD Oil
  • For professional Athletes or people who have very hard physical daily work, we recommend our 18% CBD/MCT Athletes oil.

Your diet with CBD oil

When starting out on supplementing your diet with CBD oil, you want to ensure you’re cannabinoid consumption is as efficient as possible. This is why when it comes to the amount of CBD you need to take, you will often hear us and talk about starting low & grow slow. The reason we suggest this is because of the biphasic properties of CBD.

What does Biphasic mean?

Cannabidiol amongst many other natural products is known to be biphasic. This means it has different effects on the body depending on concentration levels in the blood if it’s too low or too high. Another example of this would be alcohol which also has biphasic properties. It acts as a stimulant as blood alcohol levels reach up to 0.05%. After this, further consumption will have a depressive and sedating effect on the body.

CBD responds to our body in a similar way to alcohol. According to researchers, small doses of CBD have been shown to improve alertness and also help elevate mood. Higher doses are known to cause sedative effects, causing some to become drowsier and more relaxed.

Finding out your own personal dose can be tricky, as everybody has their own specific endocannabinoid system and what works for one may not work for another.

CBD Oil Dosage explained

What is the ideal CBD dosage??

Which CBD dosage should I take? To start out, we recommend taking a single drop. After that, it’s common to take some drops a few times during the day. Usually, an effect can be noticed already within half an hour, with the highest blood values after some 2-3 hours. This depends on personal factors including sensitivity and metabolism. With this information, you can “play around”  with the dosage, and make the drops overlap. You are your own boss and can take the drops according to your personal preference and schedule.

Start With a Lower Dose than You Think You Need

Everybody has a different history of the use of certain substances, supplements, and medications. And since we’re all made differently, what works wonders for you, might not work for your friend — and vice versa.

The best way to determine your initial CBD dosage is to count it by your body weight. Experts recommend starting with 1–6 mg of CBD per pound. Low doses allow the user to monitor their body’s reaction more effectively.

Gradually Increase the Dosage Until You Notice the Difference

Increasing the amount of CBD oil gradually is the best way to figure out the best CBD dosage.

We recommend lower CBD doses at first because if the dose is too high, it may trigger some unwanted effects, such as sleepiness, lowered blood pressure, light-headedness, or diarrhea. Side effects are a cue to dial your dose back to the last one that didn’t produce these effects.

On the other hand, if you continue to use a dosage that’s too low, you may not feel anything at all, so again — observation is key. Listen to your body, you’ll soon get a feel for how CBD works for you.

the-real-cbd-blog-is-cbd-oil-safe-for-children

When it comes to calculating the correct CBD dosage for children, various factors come into play. These include body weight, metabolism, and the nature of the ailment. Here are some general guidelines:

  • Low Dosage (1-3mg per 5 kg body weight): Best for mild symptoms, such as minor anxiety or sleep disturbances.
  • Medium Dosage (4-10mg per 5 kg body weight): Recommended for moderate symptoms.
  • High Dosage (11-20mg per 5 kg body weight): Reserved for severe conditions and must be closely monitored.

CBD Dosage Guidelines for Teenagers

Teenagers can usually tolerate higher dosages due to their larger body size and more mature metabolic systems. Yet, caution is advised. Here are some general dosages to consider:

  • Low Dosage (5-15mg): Useful for treating mild symptoms.
  • Medium Dosage (16-30mg): Effective for moderate symptoms.
  • High Dosage (31-45mg): Employed for severe symptoms and should be overseen by a medical professional.

Choosing the Right Form of CBD

From CBD oils and tinctures to edibles and topical applications, there are various forms of CBD products available. For children, flavoured CBD gummies or oil drops might be more acceptable, while teenagers might opt for capsules or vaping solutions.

How to Administer CBD

How does it work?

For minors, it’s best to start with the lowest possible dosage and gradually increase it while monitoring the effects. Always refer to the product’s label for recommended dosages and consult a healthcare provider for further advice.

The Importance of Quality: Full-Spectrum vs Isolate

Quality matters when selecting CBD products, especially for minors. We advocate for full-spectrum whole plant products for their comprehensive healing properties. These include not just CBD but also other beneficial cannabinoids.

Monitoring and Adjusting the Dosage

Regular monitoring is imperative for evaluating the effectiveness of the CBD treatment. Make a log or diary to keep track of dosage, time of administration, and any observed effects or side effects.

Can you take too much CBD?

What you need to know

Some examples are taking more drops in the morning if symptoms are more severe at that time, or taking an extra dose in between when there is discomfort. There is a difference between taking two drops three times daily, or taking three drops twice daily, so that’s worth trying out. The oil is particularly suitable for these kinds of experiments, because of the harmless nature of the product, and the zero chance of overdosing.

Cannabinoids

There is no set minimum or maximum to the number of drops you can take, although little can be expected of a single drop a day, and 30 drops would be unnecessary. Building up towards a certain “level” or “zone” is the goal. This is the number of cannabinoids that are active in the body at a given time and the corresponding level at which they are effective in treating the ailment. In this sense, it can be different from other types of medication. Sometimes a certain “activation dose” is needed, after which it’s a matter of staying in the zone. Looking for this tipping point is essential for succeeding in the treatment.

To get there, the dosage can be increased one single drop at a time. Within a few hours (or in some cases days) it should become clear whether it worked and if it was the ideal dose. In times of more physical or mental strain, a dose that would normally be sufficient might not be enough, due to the higher demand for cannabinoids by the body.

CBD side typical starter side effects

CBD has a relatively short list of side effects, most of which are considered minor. However, in high doses, CBD can produce an array of unwanted reactions, such as:

  • Dry mouth
  • Dizziness
  • Lowered blood pressure and heart rate
  • Sedation

It’s a small price to pay compared to the list of side effects caused by prescription medications.

The Importance of the Right CBD Dosage

When it comes to consuming CBD, the most pertinent question that arises is, “How much CBD should I take?” This question is pivotal because the correct dosage not only maximises the potential benefits of CBD but also minimises any side effects. In this in-depth guide, we’ll unravel the complexities surrounding CBD dosage and help you find the amount that’s just right for you.

Factors That Influence CBD Dosage

Body Weight and Metabolism

Two people might not react to CBD in the same way due to differences in body weight and metabolism. Generally, the higher the body weight, the more CBD is needed to experience its effects. Likewise, faster metabolism can mean quicker absorption.

CBD Concentration

The potency of the CBD product you’re using also plays a significant role. Products can range from low to high concentrations, so be mindful of how much CBD is in each serving.

Desired Effects

The dosage will vary depending on what you’re looking to achieve. For instance, smaller doses are usually sufficient for stress relief, whereas higher doses might be necessary for tackling chronic pain.

CBD Dosage: Methods of Consumption

The Real CBD products

CBD Oils and Tinctures

The most straightforward way to consume CBD is via sublingual oils and tinctures. Place the liquid under your tongue, wait for 30 to 60 seconds, and swallow. The recommended dosage is generally mentioned on the packaging, but a good starting point would be 20-40 mg per day, increasing gradually if needed.

CBD Capsules and Edibles

Capsules and edibles are convenient but take longer to affect your system due to the digestion process. Starting with a low dose is advised, usually around 20-25 mg per capsule.

CBD Topicals

Creams and lotions are generally for external issues like skin conditions and muscle pain. A pea-sized amount applied to the affected area is usually sufficient.

CBD Vapes

Vaping CBD provides the quickest absorption. However, the health risks associated with vaping are still under investigation, so proceed with caution. The dosage for vapes varies significantly and should be followed as per the product’s guidelines.

How to Calculate Your CBD Dosage

To find your ideal dosage, start with a low amount, say 20 mg per day. Gradually increase this by 5 mg intervals over a week, keeping an eye on how you feel. Once you find a level where you feel the desired effects without any adverse reactions, you’ve likely found your optimal dosage.

Consulting Medical Professionals

Before embarking on your CBD journey, it’s advisable to consult with a healthcare provider, especially if you’re pregnant, nursing, or taking other medications.

CBD and blood thinning medication

If you are taking any blood thinning medication please speak to your GP before deciding to take CBD. Blood thinners and CBD can be a dangerous mix unless it is managed properly. Read more here

FAQ – CBD Dosage

How do I determine the right dosage of CBD for my needs?

Finding the right CBD dosage depends on several factors including your body weight, the condition you’re treating, your individual body chemistry, and the concentration of CBD in the product you’re using. It’s often recommended to start with a small dose, like 20-40 mg per day, and gradually increase it by 5 mg per week until you feel the desired effects.

Can I overdose on CBD?

CBD is generally considered safe and non-toxic. While it’s unlikely to overdose in a harmful way, taking too much can lead to side effects like drowsiness or digestive issues. It’s important to start with a low dose and slowly increase to find what works best for you.

How long does it take to feel the effects of CBD?

The onset time for CBD can vary depending on the method of consumption. Sublingual (under the tongue) methods can take 15-30 minutes, while edibles and capsules might take an hour or more. Topical applications can vary greatly. Consistent use over several days is often needed to feel the full effects.

Does the form of CBD I take affect the dosage?

Yes, the form of CBD (oil, capsule, topical, edible, etc.) can affect how much you should take. Different forms have different concentrations and bioavailability, meaning your body may absorb and use them at different rates. Always check the product’s dosage recommendations.

Should I consult a healthcare provider before starting CBD?

Absolutely. It’s important to talk to a healthcare provider before starting any new supplement, including CBD. They can provide guidance based on your health history and current medications, ensuring safe and effective use.
