What is Inflammation?

Inflammation is the response to sudden body damage, such as cutting your finger. To heal the cut, your body sends inflammatory cells to the injury. These cells start the healing process.

There are five key signs inflammation:

• Pain: This can happen all the time or only when someone touches the area.
• Redness: This happens when the capillaries in the area get more blood than usual.
• Loss of function: It may be hard to move a joint, breathe, smell, and do other things.
• Swelling: When fluid builds up, it can lead to a condition called edema.
• Heat: If there is more blood flow to the area, it may feel warm to the touch.

Not always will you see these signs? Sometimes inflammation is “silent,” meaning there are no signs of it. You may also have a fever, feel tired, and feel sick in general.

This kind of inflammation makes you feel bad for a few days, weeks, or months.
