A recent discovery found that CBD could become the next anti-biotics

Antibiotic resistance is a growing concern in the healthcare system. One that the W H O called a “global health crisis” as far back as 2015. With recent research suggesting that antibiotic-resistant bacteria lurk in the dark corners of hospitals, including privacy curtains.  Any component that could help fight infections, without adding to the resistance problem would be a huge win for public health.

Cannabidiol to be the latest antibiotic

Research shown at the ASM Microbe 2019, CBD is now approved by the FDA to the treatment of some forms of epilepsy. CBD is currently being tested for many medical conditions such as anxiety, inflammation, and pain. There are still very few scientific data to claim that CBD can kill bacteria and it has not yet been thoroughly tested for its antibiotic properties.

At The University of Queensland’s Institute for Molecular Bioscience, Dr. Mark Blaskovich has found evidence that CBD has great efficiency in killing a large range of bacteria of the Gram-positive kind (Gram-characteristic of bacteria all have a cell wall composed of a thick layer of a particular substance). These finding also included bacteria which have become resistant to some anti-biotic. Furthermore, CBD did not lose its effectiveness after a long treatment. Best of all Dr. M. Blaskovich proved that CBD was also effective at disrupting biofilms, which is a physical bacteria growth that develops into “hard-to-treat” bacteria.

Conclusion of the study: Cannabidiol (CBD)  Importantly, the drug retained its activity against bacteria that have become highly resistant to other common antibiotics. Under extended exposure conditions that lead to resistance against vancomycin or daptomycin, Cannabidiol did not lose effectiveness. Cannabidiol was also effective at disrupting biofilms, a physical form of bacteria growth that leads to difficult-to-treat infections.

Another active cannabinoid in hemp, in addition to THC and CBD, is CBG. Cannabigerol, as the substance is called full, receives more and more media attention. And not without reason. Like THC and CBD, CBG also has an analgesic effect. The first trials with the cannabinoid seem to yield special results. Cannabigerol is an antioxidant and prevents the formation of free radicals. It appears that inflammation can be prevented by CBG lowering oxidative stress. It is known that CBG can offer relief from intestinal inflammations, such as in Crohn’s disease.
