Introduction – CBD in the medical Industry

Cannabidiol (CBD), the most important non-psychoactive natural component of industrial cannabis or , is the world's newest discovery against serious, even deadly infections.

A recent discovery found that CBD could become the next anti-biotics

Antibiotic resistance is a growing concern in the healthcare system. One that the W H O called a “global health crisis” as far back as 2015. With recent research suggesting that antibiotic-resistant bacteria lurk in the dark corners of hospitals, including privacy curtains.  Any component that could help fight infections, without adding to the resistance problem would be a huge win for public health.

Cannabidiol to be the latest antibiotic

Research shown at the ASM Microbe 2019, CBD is now approved by the FDA to the treatment of some forms of . CBD is currently being tested for many medical conditions such as anxiety, inflammation, and pain. There are still very few scientific data to claim that CBD can kill bacteria and it has not yet been thoroughly tested for its antibiotic properties.

At The University of Queensland's Institute for Molecular Bioscience, Dr. Mark Blaskovich has found evidence that CBD has great efficiency in killing a large range of bacteria of the Gram-positive kind (Gram-characteristic of bacteria all have a cell wall composed of a thick layer of a particular substance). These finding also included bacteria which have become resistant to some anti-biotic. Furthermore, CBD did not lose its effectiveness after a long treatment. Best of all Dr. M. Blaskovich proved that CBD was also effective at disrupting biofilms, which is a physical bacteria growth that develops into “hard-to-treat” bacteria.

Conclusion of the study:

Cannabidiol (CBD)  Importantly, the drug retained its activity against bacteria that have become highly resistant to other common antibiotics. Under extended exposure conditions that lead to resistance against vancomycin or daptomycin, Cannabidiol did not lose effectiveness. Cannabidiol was also effective at disrupting biofilms, a physical form of bacteria growth that leads to difficult-to-treat infections.

Cannabidiol (CBD) and pain

CBD is becoming increasingly popular as a natural and safe alternative treatment for pain complaints. CBD can offer support in the treatment of numerous, common pain complaints. Think of the following disorders:

The component responsible for the analgesic properties of cannabis is cannabidiol or CBD. Unlike THC, another important active ingredient, CBD is not psychoactive. Therefore, it does not cause a high. Not a week goes by without new research on the medicinal benefits of CBD being published.

What is CBG?

Another active cannabinoid in hemp, in addition to THC and CBD, is CBG. , as the substance is called, gets more and more media attention. And not without reason. Like THC and CBD, CBG also has an analgesic effect.

The first trials with the cannabinoid seem to yield special results. Cannabigerol is an antioxidant and prevents the formation of free radicals. It appears that inflammation can be prevented by CBG lowering oxidative stress. CBG can offer relief from intestinal inflammations, such as in Crohn's disease.

CBD in the medical Industry

CBD has emerged as a significant player in the medical industry, offering a range of potential benefits and applications. Here are some ways in which CBD is making an impact:

Pain Management:

CBD has shown promise as a natural alternative for managing pain. It interacts with the body's endocannabinoid system, which plays a role in regulating pain perception. As a result, CBD may help alleviate chronic pain, neuropathic pain, and inflammation-associated pain.

Anxiety and Mental Health:

CBD has gained attention for its potential in reducing anxiety and improving mental well-being. It may help individuals with anxiety disorders, such as generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) or post-traumatic stress disorder (), by promoting a sense of calmness and relaxation without the psychoactive effects associated with THC.

Epilepsy and Seizure Disorders:

One of the most well-known medical applications of CBD is in the treatment of epilepsy, particularly certain forms of severe childhood epilepsy, such as Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. CBD has shown significant effectiveness in reducing the frequency and severity of seizures, leading to the approval of a CBD-based medication by the FSA.

Neuroprotective Properties:

CBD exhibits neuroprotective properties, which means it may help protect and support the health of the nervous system. This has led to investigations into its potential in treating neurological conditions like multiple sclerosis (MS), Parkinson's disease, and Alzheimer's disease.

Anti-Inflammatory Effects:

CBD have anti-inflammatory properties, making it a potential therapeutic option for conditions characterized by inflammation, such as rheumatoid , inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and even . By reducing inflammation, CBD may help alleviate symptoms and improve overall well-being.

Cancer-related Symptoms:

CBD is explored for its potential in managing symptoms associated with cancer and cancer treatment. It may help alleviate chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting, reduce pain and inflammation, and improve overall quality of life for cancer patients.
